Charles Henry Jewtraw (born May 5, 1900 in Harkness , Clinton County , New York , † January 26, 1996 in Palm Beach , Florida ) was an American speed skater who won the first gold at the Winter Olympics.

Career

Jewtraw won the gold medal over 500 meters at the Olympic Games in Chamonix on January 26, 1924 and, as this was the opening event of the first Winter Olympic Games, was the first ever to win the Winter Games . However, it would be wrong to use the phrase "first Olympic champion in a winter sport", since several winter sports were previously played at summer games , such as figure skating . Jewtraw's Olympic victory was the only one of the USA at the Winter Games in Chamonix.

His winning time over 500 meters was 44.0 seconds. He also started over 1500 meters and 5000 meters, but could not win any medals over these distances.

After the Olympics, Jewtraw ended his career as a speed skater and began working as a sales representative for the sporting goods manufacturer Spalding in New York City .

Jewtraw died in Florida at the age of 95 .
