Granath first took part in the Winter Olympics in Sapporo in 1972 . He reached 16th place both over 500 meters and over 1500 meters. Four years later he won the gold medal at the Sprint World Championship in Berlin in 1976 . With his title Granath qualified for the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck . There he reached over 500 meters and 1000 meters rank 13th At the Sprint World Championships 1978 in Lake Placid Granath won bronze. Another two years later he participated in his third Winter Olympics, also in Lake Placid. He fell on both routes on which he competed, 500 meters and 1000 meters. His active career ended in 1984 when Granath tested positive for doping and was banned for 18 months.
After his career, Granath worked as a trainer in speed skating, including for junior world champion Johan Röjler .
Granath's brother Oloph Granath was also a speed skater and took part in two Winter Olympics.
