Akira Kuroiwa ( Japanese 黒 岩 彰 , Kuroiwa Akira ; born September 6, 1961 in Tsumagoi , Gunma ) is a former Japanese speed skater .

Kuroiwa was the first Japanese in 1983, and until 2009 the only one, to win the Sprint World Championship . After he achieved bronze in 1986 , he was again world champion in the sprint all-around in 1987 . Furthermore, Kuroiwa took part in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo . There he took tenth and ninth places over 500 and 1000 meters, respectively. At his second Olympic Winter Games in Calgary in 1988 , he won the bronze medal over 500 meters. He finished the competition over 1000 meters in 20th place. At the 1986 Winter Asian Games , Kuroiwa also won the race over 500 meters. In the course of his career he won six world cup races and achieved four national sprint championship titles.

After the 1988 Winter Games, Kuroiwa resigned from active sport and was then active as a coach. His brother Munehisa Kuroiwa was also active as a speed skater.
