William "Bill" Demong (born March 29, 1980 in Saranac Lake ) is a former American Nordic combined skier , ski jumper and cross-country skier .

Career

Nordic combination

Demong, who later started for the Lake Placid Ski Club , began skiing in 1989 and has participated in international competitions since 1997. At his first Nordic Junior World Ski Championships , he finished 37th in Gundersen in 1997 and 11th in the team. A year later he was 6th with the team and 18th in the individual in St. Moritz . In December 1997 he made his World Cup debut in Steamboat Springs and came in 43rd place in the sprint. The US Ski Association sent him to his first Olympic Winter Games in Nagano in 1998 . There he came with the relay on the 10th place and in the individual on the 34th place. A season later he got his first World Cup points. In 1999 he was allowed to go to his first Nordic World Ski Championships in Ramsau . At the world championships he improved his performance and came in 18th place in the sprint, 27th place in the individual and 10th place in the team. At the third Nordic Junior Ski World Championships in 1999 in Saalfelden , he won the gold medal in a team and 13th place in the individual.

In the 1999/2000 season he finished 11th in the World Cup in Vuokatti . At his fourth and last Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2000 in Štrbské Pleso , he reached the silver medal with the team and came in 24th place in the individual. In the World Cup season Demong was seven times in the top 15. At his second Nordic World Ski Championships in 2001 in Lahti , he had to be satisfied with disappointing results in sprints and individual races and ended up with the team in eighth place. In the 2001/02 Olympic winter he won the first World Cup of his career in Liberec . At the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City he could not build on his good individual performances, but in the team he showed good performance in jumping, missed the connection on the cross-country ski run and so with his teammates Matt Dayton , Johnny Spillane and Todd Lodwick only the fourth jumped Place like in Lahti. After the Summer Grand Prix 2002 in Winterberg , he fell from the team hotel into the empty swimming pool and suffered severe skull fractures. Because of the stress of ski jumping, a career as a combined competitor was in question. He had to take a break from competition throughout the 2002/03 season. The doctors only allowed him endurance training on cross-country skis and he started his second career as a cross-country skier.

After a long break from competition, he started the 2003/04 season. Because he lacked jumping practice and the old form, he ended up outside the points in all World Cup events until Christmas. That is why he was transferred to the B World Cup at the beginning of January 2004 to regain his form. He succeeded quite well, because he found his way back to his old strength. At the end of the season he achieved top results again. At the beginning of the 2004/05 World Championship season he made three podiums in a row in the B World Cup, including a win in Lake Placid . Then he was brought back into the A World Cup and achieved six results under the top 15. In the end, he landed in the overall World Cup in 17th place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 in Oberstdorf reached a good 12th place. A fifth place came about with the relay and in the sprint he came in 19th. Because he still lacked some performance records in the following winter season 2005/06, he was transferred to the B World Cup for a few races. Before Christmas he achieved two B World Cup victories in Lake Placid and Park City , and he also achieved good A World Cup placements again. In his third participation in the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin , Demong put himself under pressure and did not show his true level of performance. In the individual he came in 15th place, in the sprint in 25th place and with the team the disappointing seventh place.

In the 2006/07 World Cup season there wasn't much to see of Demong until the turn of the year, but in the new year he got stronger and stronger and took fourth place twice in Oberstdorf and Ruhpolding . In the title fights in Sapporo he confirmed his good performance, in the individual he was only 8.5 seconds behind Ronny Ackermann and won the silver medal. In the sprint he took 13th place and 9th place with the team. Until the end of the World Cup season he was able to confirm his good performance, so he achieved his second World Cup victory in Lahti and was third in the sprint in Oslo. Also in the next 2007/08 season he was able to fight for the top spots. He was among the top ten 16 times, including his third World Cup victory in Trondheim . The 2008/09 World Cup season was very promising for Demong, as he won five World Cups and was third in the overall World Cup, as in the previous year. His fifth Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 also went very well. Fifth place jumped out in the mass start, the bronze medal in the individual on the normal hill and the gold medal on the large hill.

In the Olympic season 2009/10 he won the World Cup stop in Val di Fiemme and 12 at the end of the overall World Cup together with was Brett Camerota , Todd Lodwick and Johnny Spillane won Demong on 23 February 2010, the silver medal in the team competition of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver . A few days later he won the gold medal in the individual on the large hill. The 2010/11 World Cup season was “to be forgotten” for Demong, because he only got four points in eight starts and was 44th in the overall World Cup. The 2011 Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo did not go according to his expectations either. In the individual on the normal hill, he was in seventh place, on the large hill he was only sixth. In his two team appearances, he missed the medal ranks and finished sixth and fourth. A third and fourth place were the best results in the 2011/12 World Cup season . Overall he was 20th overall in the World Cup. The 2012/13 season was also unsatisfactory for him. He achieved the best result with 12th place in Klingenthal . In contrast, the 2013 Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme went well. In the team competition he won the bronze medal with his teammates Taylor Fletcher , Bryan Fletcher and Todd Lodwick from the normal hill and the subsequent 4 × 5 km cross-country skiing.

Demong ended his career after the 2015 World Championships .

Cross-country skiing

After his accident in Winterberg, he started at the American Birkebeiner 2002 in Wisconsin , and achieved a good 14th place. On February 22, 2003, he made his debut in the Cross-Country Skiing Marathon Cup in Hayward, finishing 14th after a 52 km freestyle mass start. In the following winter of 2003/04 he could only be seen in the Continental Cup in Soldier Hollow in the 10 km freestyle and came in 25th place. At his first Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 2011 as a cross-country skier, he was only used in the 50 km race and was 51. At the Marathon Cup race in Samedan in 2013 , he came in 34th place after 42 km. Demong also made his debut in the Cross-Country Skiing World Cup in Oslo on March 16, 2013 and was 58 in the 50 km mass start race.

Ski jumping

In 2004 Demong was in two FIS races and in 2009 in the team competition in Lahti, where he with his teammates Anders Johnson , Nicholas Fairall and Eric Camerota did not reach the second round with 12th place.

Private

Demong attended Saranac Lake Central School and the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid while he was still in school. In his youth he worked as a carpenter . He is married to Kathrine Koczynski .
