The Republic of Moldova took part in the Winter Olympic Games for the third time in 2002 . The country sent out who competed in three disciplines. Cross-country skier Ion Bucsa acted as the flag bearer at the opening ceremony.

The country hit the headlines when the German presenter Stefan Raab tried to compete for the country in cross-country skiing. In the end, however, the National Olympic Committee of Moldova gave Raba a rejection.
