Ye Qiaobo (* Chinese  葉喬波 , Pinyin Yè Qiáobō ; August 3, 1964 in Changchun , Jilin ) is a former Chinese speed skater .

Career

Ye Qiaobo began her career as a speed skater at the World Youth Championships in 1981 and also took part in the World Youth Championships in the following two years. In 1985 she became a member of the Chinese national team. During her participation in the 1988 World Speed Skating Sprint Championships , she hit the headlines when she was disqualified for doping. By claiming that it was a sports doctor's fault, she fought her way back into the sport.

Ye Qiaobo took second place behind Monique Garbrecht at the speed skating sprint world championship in 1991 on all distances and in the overall standings . A year later, she was first in the overall standings at the 1992 speed skating sprint world championships, making her the first Chinese female speed skating world champion. She was able to repeat this success a year later.

At the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , she was traded as the favorite for the short distances, but lost to the American Bonnie Blair in the disciplines of 500 meters and 1000 meters. Nevertheless, with the 2nd place she achieved the first ever Chinese medals at the Olympic Winter Games. At the Speed Skating World Cup 1992/93 she achieved the overall victory over 500 meters.

After knee surgery in 1993, Ye Qiaobo tried to return to the top of the world. She finished 5th at the 1994 World Speed Skating Sprint Championships and won the bronze medal over 1000 meters at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer . However, since she was still suffering from the effects of the operation, she retired from active sports that same year.

After the sport

After obtaining her MBA , she opened her own company and a sports club named after her. Ye campaigned for Beijing to have an indoor ski area around the 2008 Summer Olympics . It was built at government expense for around 400 million yuan and opened on September 28, 2009. The usable area is around 60,000 square meters, a major part of which is taken up by the main runway with a length of 200 m and a width of 50 m. At the opening, the facility was given the name of its sponsor: Qiaobo Skiing Dome Beijing .
