Sheila Young
Sheila Grace Young-Ochowicz (born October 14, 1950 in Birmingham , Michigan ) is a former American speed skater and cyclist .
Life
At the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck , she won the gold medal in speed skating over 500 m, the silver medal over 1000 m and came second over the 1500 m distance. Sheila Young became the first US athlete to win three medals at the Winter Olympics.
Sheila Young was also successful as a cyclist on the track . She became world champion in sprint three times ( 1973, 1976 and 1982 ) ; she was the first woman to become world champion in cycling and speed skating in the same year.
Sheila Young is married to Jim Ochowicz , a cyclist who was president of USA Cycling until 2006 . The couple have three children, Alex, Kate and Elli. Like her mother, Elli Ochowicz is a speed skater and participant in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin .
