Sven Nys (born June 17, 1976 in Bonheiden , Belgium ) is a former Belgian cyclist . He is one of the most popular athletes in Belgium. Nys achieved his greatest successes in cyclocross and is considered the most successful rider in this discipline since the turn of the millennium.

In particular, Nys became the U23 cyclocross world champion in 1997 and 1998 and was able to repeat this success in the elite class in 2005 and 2013. Nys was the overall winner of the season's races in the cyclocross world cup classification seven times . No other driver has ever achieved this.

Cycling career

Nys won the U23 cyclocross world championships in 1997 and 1998 . In 1998 he became a member of the Dutch cycling team Rabobank and competed in road cycling competitions for this team without being able to build on his successes in the field. Among other things, he started in 2001 and 2002 in the classic Paris-Roubaix cycle and was 41st and 36th respectively in 2005 and 2013 he was cyclocross world champion in the elite class.

In mountain bike sport, he was three times cross-country champion in his country, but had to give up the mountain bike race at the 2012 Olympic Games . In 2011 Nys became a member of the Athletes' Commission of the World Cycling Federation UCI .

After the end of the 2015/2016 cross season, Nijs ended his active career and took over the management of the UCI Continental team Telenet-Fidea .
