A roller dynamo or roller dynamo is a bicycle dynamo , similar to the side runner dynamo , but it does not run on the tire sidewall, but on the tread of the tire. It is usually mounted behind the bottom bracket near or instead of the stand. In contrast to a side runner, a wheel attached to the dynamo does not run on the tire, but the entire cylindrical dynamo external runner rolls on the tire . For this purpose it is attached at both ends and provided with a running surface on the outside.

A disadvantage of roller dynamos is their dependence on the weather (e.g. snow), comparable to side dynamos.

Depending on the design, roller dynamos can be switched on and off via a Bowden cable on the handlebar.
