As a junior rider , van der Poel was world champion three times: he won the cyclocross world championships in 2012 Koksijde and 2013 Louisville as well as in the road race of the world championships in Florence in 2013 .

Among the adults, van der Poel was initially particularly successful in cyclocross. In the following season he successfully participated increasingly in elite races and in the Czech Tábor world champion in cyclocross . He celebrated his second title win at the 2019 Cyclocross World Championships .

Parallel to his success in cyclocross, van der Poel drove on the road for the UCI Continental Team BKCP-Powerplus and achieved his first international elite victory on the road in the one-day race Ronde van Limburg in 2014. After several victories in other races of the UCI Europe Tour , he was the Dutch road champion and vice European champion in each sprint of a smaller front field in 2018.

After his team received a license as a Professional Continental Team under the name Corendon-Circus in 2019 , van der Poel was invited to take part in races of the UCI WorldTour . In March 2019 he won his first competition of this series with Dwars door Vlaanderen in a sprint of a group of five. In the same month he won the De Brabantse Pijl race , 34 years after his father Adrie van der Poel . On April 21, at the Amstel Gold Race, he played a key role in bringing a chasing group closer to the leading Julian Alaphilippe and Jakob Fuglsang , and then won his second WorldTour race in the sprint. In the same year he won the title at the European Mountain Bike Championships in Cross Country despite a fall. Thanks to these successes, Mathieu van der Poel was able to advance to the top 20 of the UCI world rankings in 2019, both on the road and in mountain biking in cross country and cyclocross.
