Johan van der Velde (born December 12, 1956 in Rijsbergen ) is a former Dutch cyclist . He was a professional from 1978 to 1990.

Athletic career

Van der Velde began his professional career in 1978 with the TI-Raleigh team . In the first season he won the Tour of the Netherlands and the Tour de Romandie . The following year he took part in his first Tour de France . He finished them in 14th place and was able to win both team time trials with the team.

In 1980 he won the Critérium du Dauphiné and was Dutch road champion. During the tour he supported Joop Zoetemelk in his victory. TI-Raleigh again won both team time trials and van der Velde managed to win the junior championship of the Tour de France with 12th place . He finished twelfth again in the Tour de France in 1981 and won two stages.

In 1982 he was again Dutch champion and was at the Tour de France 1982 in third behind the winner Bernard Hinault and the second Joop Zoetemelk on the podium in Paris.

In 1983 he won the championship in Zurich .

From 1984 van der Velde drove at Metauro Mobili, although he had offers from Peter Post or Jan Raas . That year he finished fourth at Paris-Roubaix and third each at Settimana Internazionale and Milan-Vignola . He also finished the Giro d'Italia 1984 in fifth place overall.

In 1986 he drove for Peter Post's Panasonic team . That year he won a stage in the Tour de France and wore the yellow jersey for two days.

From 1987 to 1988 he drove for the Italian team Gis Gelati. During this time he was able to win the points classification of the Giro d'Italia and in 1987 two difficult stages through the Dolomites. After the sports career

After his active days, he got on the wrong track due to his dependence on amphetamines and served a ten-month prison sentence for several burglaries. After his time in prison, he got a job as a welder in the port of Rotterdam and looked after VIP during some races for the Quick Step team .

From 2012 he is active in the organization of cycling races, cycling trips and as an ambassador for the Cycle for Hope Foundation . From 2015 he works as a bus driver for the Roompot Oranje Peloton . In February 2019 it became known that van der Velde had leukemia .

doping

In 1981 van der Velde won Liège – Bastogne – Liège and was convicted of doping. In June 1981 van der Velde was suspended for one month for doping and was fined 125 Dutch guilders . At the end of his sporting career, he admitted to using amphetamines regularly and said, "A new criterion every day. It's hideous, but you have to make money. So to keep up we take amphetamines every two or three days. During the Tour de France is the same every day: a tip in the morning and a tablet in the evening. "

His two sons Ricardo van der Velde and Alain van der Velde and his brother Theo van der Velde were also cyclists.
