The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1984 was the 82nd edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 8th, 1984.
The race led from Compiègne , around 80 kilometers north of Paris , to Roubaix , where it ended in the Vélodrome André-Pétrieux . The entire route was 265.5 kilometers long. 158 drivers started, 42 of whom were able to place. The winner Sean Kelly completed the race at an average speed of 36.074 km / h .
The streets were wet and muddy. At the Trouée d'Arenberg , La Redoute's two teammates , Alain Bondue and Gregor Braun , had a one and a half minute lead. With 40 kilometers to go, Sean Kelly paced to catch up with the two and Rudy Rogiers followed him. Kelly and Rogiers caught up with Braun and Bondue. Braun couldn't keep up, and Bondue fell. It came to the sprint between Rogiers and Kelly, which Kelly won. This made him the first and so far (2015) only Irishman who managed to win Paris-Roubaix . Kelly, who was christened King Kelly by the Irish media , later said: " Paris-Roubaix is the most terrible race to drive but the most beautiful race to win."
