Jan Geurt Siebelink (born February 13, 1938 in Velp ( Gelderland )) is a Dutch writer . His novel Knielen op een bed violen (title of the German translation: In the garden of the father ), published in 2005, is the most successful Dutch novel in post-war history with more than 800,000 copies sold .

Life

Siebelink grew up in a strictly Calvinist family . After studying pedagogy and Romance languages in Leiden , he worked as a teacher for Dutch and French in Laag-Soeren (municipality of Rheden ). In his free time he studied French linguistics and literature and learned to love French literature, which was little known in the Netherlands until now. During his studies he learned the work of a French writer of Dutch descent, J.-K. Huysmans, whose novel A rebors he translated into Dutch (title: Tegen de keer ). In 1975 he made his debut with the narrative volume Nachtschade , in which the fear of decay and death plays a central role. In the following period, Siebelink regularly presented French writers who impressed him in the Haagse Post (later De tijd ) and other weeklies (later published in bundles in the books De reptielse geest and De prins van nachtelijk Parijs ). The author wrote the book Pijn is genot (pain is pleasure) in 1992 about two professional cyclists, Erik Breulink and Johan van der Velde .

His autobiographical novel In the garden of the father , which was also favorably discussed in the national German-language feature pages, describes the life story of a gardener who is becoming more and more dependent on a fundamentalist Christian community and thereby alienating himself from his family. In 2016, the film based on his book Knielen op een bed violen was released . In 2016 Siebelink wrote the story Dons for the National Lunch (Nationale Voorleeslunchverhaal), which is read aloud in libraries and care facilities nationwide on Senior Citizens' Day (October 7th).

Today he lives in Ede .
