James Purdy
James Otis Purdy ( July 17, 1914 in Hicksville , Ohio - March 13, 2009 in Englewood , New Jersey ) was an American writer .
Life
Purdy was born in 1914 (as was not known until after his death) near Hicksville, Ohio. He attended from 1944 to 1947, the university in the Mexican Puebla , the University of Chicago and the University in Madrid . Between 1949 and 1953 Purdy taught at Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin . Purdy was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship twice, in 1958 and 1962 .
After his literary debut in 1956, Purdy published almost 20 novels and a large number of short stories. In addition, he published poems, plays and drawings. Purdy's oeuvre has occasionally led to strong polarization among critics and the public due to its sometimes extremely non-conformist portrayal of sexual processes. Purdy last lived in Brooklyn Heights , New York City.
