Location of Velp in the municipality of Rheden |
Velp is a place in the municipality of Rheden in the Dutch province of Gelderland . It borders both the towns of Rheden and Rozendaal (municipality of Rozendaal) and the city of Arnhem . Velp has 18,056 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2018) and has an area of 11.02 km². The A12 motorway forms the dividing line between Arnhem and Velp. Other important arteries are the provincial roads N348 and N785. Velp is crossed by the Arnhem-Zutphen railway line. In the north of this route there are green, quiet residential areas, while Velp-Süd is characterized by simple buildings. In the north of Velp is the famous Emma pyramid.
On January 1, 1812, the municipality of Rheden was divided into the municipalities of Dieren and Velp. The village of Rozendaal was added to the new municipality of Velp . On January 1, 1818, this community was repealed. Velp and Dieren again formed the municipality of Rheden and Rozendaal became an independent municipality.
Velp's gold treasure
In 1851 a treasure was unearthed in Velp, which consisted of golden objects of art from the late Roman-Early Merovingian period ( Velp treasure ). The treasure was sold to Prussia and first came to Berlin . In 1945 this was taken away by the Russian occupation forces . Since then he has been in a Moscow museum. Already in 1715 a deposit of a similar time was discovered in Velp .

- Koningsdag (King's Day, national holiday on April 27th) - Velleper Oranjemarkt, shopping mile and street painting. The Koningsdagmarkt in Velp has grown into the largest market in the east of the Netherlands with more than 180 shops. - Velleper Donderdagen - The last two Thursdays in July and the first two Thursdays in August is the festival of Velleper Donderdagen (around the Hoofdstraat). Every Thursday has its own theme.
- Castle building - At this event, children build huts under supervision for a week on the grounds of MBO Helicon.
- Dag van de buurt - Neighborhood Day. A small market is being organized in the heart of Velp-Süd for Neighborhood Day.
- Annual lantern parade by the Velper youth

Higher vocational schools
The Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein has offices in Leeuwarden and Velp. It offers courses in the following courses: forestry and nature management, gardening and landscaping, land and water management, business and agribusiness, food technology, animal and livestock husbandry, international development management. Arboricultura is a student association of the Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein and the MBSC Helicon.
