Knielen op een bed violen ( German : knee on a violet bed ) is a novel adaptation of the Dutch novel of the same name by Jan Siebelink from 2016 . The film tells a love story and a classic fateful drama about two people who love each other. It is a film about love, faith and making decisions. After it opened in theaters on February 25, 2016, 100,000 visitors saw the film on March 15, 2016.

Hans Sievez and his wife and childhood sweetheart Margje lead a happy family life in their small nursery. Both have to work hard to keep the company afloat. But their unconditional love for one another makes them strong. One day Hans meets the preacher of a strictly Protestant sect , Jozef Mieras, who tells him about his view of God and who rekindles the memory of his strictly religious upbringing. When Hans then has a deep religious experience, he is convinced that he has had direct contact with God and that he is called . In the search for the meaning of life and eternal life following this experience , Hans loses sight more and more of the real world, as well as the contact with his surroundings. He falls under the spell of the strict faith of a sect, so that the estrangement from his wife and two sons increases. While Hans seems to be increasingly coming under the control of the sect, Margje can do little more than watch the love of her life slowly but surely vanish.
Novel
The five hundred-page novel of the same name (German title: In the garden of the father) by Jan Siebelink (born 1938) has strong autobiographical features. It was published in 2005 and with 800,000 copies (2020) and 2 million readers has become one of the best-selling and most-read Dutch novels. The German translation is by Bettina Bach and was published by Arche Verlag in Zurich in 2007 .
There is a discussion in the Netherlands about why the novel Knielen op een bed violen is so successful. The film producer Alain De Levita speculates: “Although belief currently only plays a major role for a few people, it is probably still in our Dutch DNA. I think that many people want to try to understand the religious and cultural background of our small country. "

The film is about what a fundamentalist understanding of religion can do to people. The radical preachers do not tolerate discussion of their faith. You can feel, but not think. Other opinions are suppressed and disrespectfully pushed aside. It is not the individual that counts, but the collective to which one has to submit.
