UCI Road World Championships 1984
The 1984 UCI Road World Championships took place on September 2, 1984 in Barcelona , Spain . Because of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 , only the world champion of professional drivers was determined; the amateur decisions were not made. Instead, the Olympic champions were also counted as world champions.
Racing action
The professional driver's racetrack was 255.5 kilometers long and, like in 1973, when the world championship was also held in Barcelona, led over the 173 meter high Montjuïc mountain with its arduous climb to the Castell. It was very hot with peak temperatures around 40 degrees. These difficult conditions led to the premature retirement of 88 of the 119 drivers who started. In addition to many favorites, all eight German athletes were among those eliminated.
After a solo journey over the last 19 kilometers, the 27-year-old Belgian Claude Criquielion was the new world champion with a lead of 14 seconds over the Italian Claudio Corti . Only one minute later the chasing group arrived, from which Steve Bauer from Canada secured third place. Defending champion Greg LeMond from the USA was only 27 with over three minutes on Criquielion.
The race suffered from considerable organizational deficiencies, among other things, the drivers were repeatedly hindered by spectators streaming onto the track.
