Alberto Fernández Blanco

Alberto Fernández Blanco (born January 15, 1955 in Cuena , † December 14, 1984 in Aranda de Duero), called El Galleta (sp., Eng .: The biscuit ), was a Spanish cyclist . He had a fatal accident on the way back from being honored as the best Spanish professional cyclist of 1984.

Life

Alberto Fernández grew up as a child in Aguilar de Campoo , la gallertera and owed his nickname El Galleta to this circumstance .

In 1978 he became a professional cyclist. During his career he achieved several successes in important stage races , such as the Tour of the Basque Country or the Tour of Catalonia . He also achieved stage victories in the Vuelta a España and the Giro d'Italia .

His best overall placement in the Tour de France was tenth in 1982 . At the Giro d'Italia 1983 he was third. He achieved two podium finishes at the Vuelta a España: He was third in 1983 and second in 1984 .

On December 14, 1984, Alberto Fernández was honored in Madrid with the Superpestigio Unipublic as the best Spanish professional cyclist of 1984. On the way back to his home in Santander , he was killed in a car accident. His wife Inmaculada also died. They left behind their son Alberto Fernández Sainz , who turned three the day after the accident and later became a professional cyclist himself.
