Gottfried "Godi" Schmutz (born October 26, 1954 in Hagenbuch ) is a former Swiss cyclist .

Life

Godi Schmutz became a professional racing driver in 1977. In 1978, 1980 and 1985 he won the title of Swiss road champion. His 1983 title was stripped of his due to doping . In 1978, he finished third in the Tour of Britain .

Schmutz also took part in major tours such as the Giro d'Italia (1979 to 1982), the Tour de Suisse (1977 to 1983) and the Germany tour (1979 to 1982). In 1979 he finished ninth in the overall ranking of the Giro. In 1985 he won the Grand Prix di Lugano .

His arch rival was Beat Breu ; the rivalry between the two riders reached its climax at the "Tour de Suisse" in 1981. Schmutz did not support Breu as desired, so that Breu said: "De Gottfried isch for mi gstorbe." and him as "Godi Schmutz, da bastard" referred to what has become a popular phrase in Swiss cycling.

Godi Schmutz now works for an insurance company. In his free time, he heads the junior department at "RMV Elgg", from which the Swiss track champion Andrea Wolfer comes.
