Michael Schär (born September 29, 1986 in Geuensee ) is a Swiss cyclist .
Athletic career
In 2004 Michael Schär became Swiss junior champion in the individual time trial , in the following year and in 2006 in the U23 class as well. In 2006 he became a member of the Liberty Seguros youth team and joined ProTeam Phonak on August 1st . After this team ceased racing at the end of 2006, he signed with Astana for two years (until the end of 2008). After three years he moved to the BMC team. In 2012 he started in the road race at the Olympic Games in London and finished 87th.
Schär achieved his greatest career success to date by winning the title in the road race of the Swiss Championships in 2013 after winning it on a demanding course in a two-man sprint against Martin Elmiger . The following year he scored his first individual victory in an international competition with a stage win in the Tour of Utah . In 2016 he finished second overall on the Tour of the Fjord .
Schär started several times in the Tour de France . His first start was in 2012 , where he finished 49th overall. In 2013 , Schär was forced to retire after the ninth stage due to an injury sustained in a fall on the seventh stage.
