Stefan Mutter (* 3. October 1956 in Basel ) is a former Swiss professional - cyclist .

Stefan Mutter competed in his first race at the age of 15, back then for the Velo and Moto Club Birsfelden . In the following years he achieved a number of successes. He was successful as a lone fighter as well as in the sprint or mountain arrivals. He also had some success with the team. One of his great successes as an amateur was the two bronze medals at the 1978 World Cup in individual and with the team.

Mother began his professional career in 1979 and immediately achieved second place in the Paris – Nice race . In 1981 he won the Mediterranean Tour , finished second in Liège – Bastogne – Liège and also Swiss champion. 1982 was Stefan Mutter's most successful professional year. He won points at the Vuelta and the Tour de Suisse , won a stage at the Tour de France , was third at Liège-Bastogne-Liège and fourth at Paris-Roubaix . In 1983, mother managed the best Tour de Suisse. He finished fourth overall. In 1984 there was another highlight, a stage victory at the Giro d'Italia .

After the 1990 season, Stefan Mutter announced his retirement from professional sport and was honored with the Baselbieter Sports Prize in 1991.

Today Stefan Mutter lives with his three children and his wife in Beinwil SO .
