Benno Wiss

Benno Wiss (born July 13, 1962 in Dietwil ) is a former Swiss cyclist who won an Olympic silver medal in 1984.

In 1982 Benno Wiss achieved his first victory when he won the first stage of the Circuit Franco-Belge stage race. In 1983 Wiss won the Klingnau reservoir tour and the Franco-Belge circuit . At the cycling world championships in Altenrhein , he took second place in the team time trial behind the Soviet four in front of his home crowd, together with Othmar Haefliger , Daniel Heggli and Heinz Imboden .

In 1984 Wiss repeated his victories at the Klingnau reservoir tour and at the Circuit Franco-Belge and won several one-day races, such as the Gran Premio di Lugano . At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , Wiss was the only driver from last year's runner-up team; together with Alfred Achermann , Richard Trinkler and Laurent Vial , he reached second place behind the Italian foursome.

Immediately after the Olympic Games, Benno Wiss signed a professional contract with the French racing team La Vie Claire . At the Tour de l'Avenir , he won two stages. In 1985 he won a stage each at the Tour de l'Avenir and at the Tour of Denmark and took second place overall at the Tour du Limousin . With rank 26 at the cycling world championships and rank 85 at the Giro d'Italia , however, he was less successful in the big races. In March 1986, Wiss ended his cycling career.

Honors

In 1983 Benno Wiss was elected Swiss Team of the Year together with Imboden, Häflinger and Heggli after their second place at the Road World Championships and in 1984 after second place at the Rail World Championships with Achermann, Trinkler and Vial .
