The 1959 UCI Road World Championships took place on August 15 and 16 in Zandvoort , the Netherlands . The professional drivers held the World Championship for the 26th time, the amateur championship took place for the 32nd time and the women held their World Championship for the second time. The new world champions were André Darrigade from France for the professional drivers, Gustav-Adolf Schur ( GDR ) as the defending champion for the amateurs and the Belgian Yvonne Reynders for the women.

Racetrack

The world championship races were held on the Formula 1 circuit, Circuit Park Zandvoort , located directly on the North Sea coast . The track, which was equipped with bitumen pavement and rough asphalt, had an essentially flat profile and only had difficulties in a few sharp bends and narrow passages. A 10.43-kilometer circuit had been set out for the races, which the professional drivers had to complete 28 times, the amateurs 18 times and the women seven times.

Professionals

In front of 170,000 spectators on Sunday, August 16, 69 riders competed in the pros, 44 of whom made it to the finish line. Among them were the five German drivers Gunther Debussmann , Friedhelm Fischerkeller , Lothar Friedrich , Hennes Junkermann and Franz Reitz . There were 28 laps with a total length of 292 km to complete, the strong wind from the North Sea proved to be a handicap.

After the seventh lap, a leading group with the eventual world champion André Darrigade , to which the German driver Friedhelm Fischerkeller belonged, pulled away. In the end, eight drivers crossed the finish line at the same time with an hourly average of 38.250 km after 7 hours, 30 minutes and 43 seconds, in the final sprint the Frenchman Darrigade was the fastest ahead of the Italian Michele Gismondi and Noël Foré from Italy.

The best German driver was the Kölner Fischerkeller, which started with the amateurs last year. He finished sixth, at the same time as the winner. The German champion and Tour de Suisse winner 1959 Hennes Junkermann reached 12th place in the chasing group, 22 seconds behind. The 1958 world champion, the Italian Ercole Baldini , only finished 25th this time.

Amateurs

94 riders from 21 countries, including riders from the two German cycling associations, took part in the 32nd Amateur World Championship, which had to cover a distance of 189 km. Only 59 participants reached the goal. The German Cycling Association of the GDR (DRSV) had nominated six drivers: Bernhard Eckstein , Erich Hagen , Günter Lörke , Johannes Schober , last year's world champion and GDR champion Gustav-Adolf Schur and Manfred Weißleder . Six actors from the Association of German Cyclists also took part: Alfred Heckemüller , Lippeck, Werner Limbach , Günter Reisenauer , Ludwig Troche and the German champion Günter Tüller . With Schur, a reigning world champion competed for the first time.

At the beginning of the 5th round a six-man breakaway group had formed, among them the Swiss Schleuniger and the Austrian Varga. However, she was quickly caught again by the peloton. In the 10th lap, five drivers tried again to break away from the field, led by the Italian Zorzi. One lap later, the group had grown to ten drivers. The two GDR drivers Schur and Hagen made sure that another 13 players were able to break away from the main field, but that the leading group never let go more than a minute away.

After another attempt to break away was started in the 14th lap, World Champion Schur started the decisive attack. In the last lap he managed to break away from the peloton, which had since been reunited, with a strong run. Only the Dutch Maliepaart could follow him, behind them the GDR drivers took over the task of braking the field. The Dutchman took on the final sprint 270 meters from the finish line, 100 meters from the finish line both drivers were tied and in the end Schur won with half a tire width and successfully defended his world championship title.

Women

The women's world championship, which was held for the second time since 1958, took place on Saturday, August 15, before the men's amateur race. 30 female racing drivers had started the 72 km long route, only 13 participants reached the finish. After one hour, 53 minutes and 32 seconds, the 22-year-old Belgian Yvonne Reynders was the new world champion with an hourly average of 21.29 km. The only German in the field of 13 was the GDR driver Elfriede Vey, who crossed the finish line in 9th place. The Soviet participants who sprinted places 2, 3, 6 and 11 proved to be surprisingly strong. Of the top three winners of the 1958 Women's World Cup, only the Soviet driver Maria Lukschina (6th) was among the 13 participants.
