Gilbert Desmet

Gilbert Desmet (born February 3, 1931 in Roeselare ) is a former Belgian cyclist .

Gilbert Desmet was a professional from 1952 to 1967 . Before that, he started as an independent one year . During these years he won 101 victories, including Paris – Tours , Kuurne – Brussels – Kuurne (both 1958), the Flèche Wallone and the Flanders Championship (both 1964). He won the GP Briek Schotte four times, making it the record winner in this race, and three times the Omloop van het Houtland , which is also a record, but which he shares with André Maelbrancke and Etienne De Wilde .

Desmet started six times in the Tour de France . In 1956 he wore the yellow jersey for two stages and in 1963 for ten stages. In 1962 he was fourth overall and in 1964 eighth.

Gilbert Desmet is not related to the racing cyclist of the same name (* 1936) from Nazareth, Belgium .
