André Maelbrancke

André Maelbrancke (born April 23, 1918 in Torhout ; † September 26, 1986 there ) was a Belgian cyclist .

André Maelbrancke was a professional racing driver from 1939 to 1955. In 1942 he was Belgian road racing champion. In 1945 he won the first edition of the Omloop van het Houtland and two more times in 1950 and 1951, and in 1948 the Grand Prix Briek Schotte . In 1952 he won at Quer durch Flanders and at Kuurne – Brussels – Kuurne .

At the beginning of his career, Maelbrancke was seen as a serious competitor of Rik Van Steenbergen , but ultimately could not reach his class because, according to experts, he was not ready to really torture himself and also liked to drink alcohol. After the end of his cycling career, he opened a café.
