Serge Baguet (born August 18, 1969 in Opbrakel ; † February 9, 2017 in Sint-Lievens-Houtem ) was a Belgian cyclist .

Career

He lost in the Belgian youth championship in 1986 in an unusual way. At the finish line, neither he nor Wilfried Nelissen could be seen as the winner in the finish photo. The Belgian federation then set a sprint over 1,000 meters to decide about the championship, which Nelissen then won. Baguet became a professional with the Belgian Lotto team in 1991 , for which he drove for four years before moving to Vlaanderen in 2002 . During this time he won stages in the Tour de Limousin , the Tour of Britain and Classica Sabanagino . Then he ended his career prematurely and worked as a roofer in his father-in-law's company.

In 2000 he continued his career with the lottery team and celebrated his greatest career success with a stage win at the 2001 Tour de France . In the following years he came second at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne and at the GP Ouest France-Plouay . In 2005 he won two stages at the Ruta del Sol and a little later became Belgian road racing champion. In 2006 and 2007 he drove for the Belgian ProTeam Quick Step-Innergetic . At the end of the 2007 season, Baguet ended his cycling career.

As a result of cancer, he had to cancel a planned mountain bike comeback in 2016. On February 9, 2017, Baguet died of colon cancer at the age of 47 after multiple chemotherapy treatments.
