Petrus Oellibrandt

Petrus "Piet" Oellibrandt (born December 1, 1935 in Beveren-Waas ; † June 15, 2014 ) was a Belgian racing cyclist .

life and career

Petrus Oellibrandt was a professional racing driver from 1958 to 1967. During this time he was Belgian champion four times: 1959 in road racing, 1960, 1961 and 1962 in the single pursuit on the track . He also won the Scheldt Flanders Prize three times - in 1960, 1962 and 1963 .

The Belgian road championship in 1959 took place in Herentals , the place of residence of Rik Van Looy , who accordingly started the race as a favorite. However, Van Looy only crossed the finish line in sixth, 30 seconds behind, and Oellibrandt received the “Tricolore Trui” from the Belgian Prince Alexander.

Oellibrandt ended his cycling career on September 23, 1967. At a race in Kemzeke he was way ahead when he heard of the death of his compatriot Roger De Wilde , who had suffered cardiac arrest during the race. He got off his bike on the spot and never raced again.

After his active time, Oellibrandt opened a sports café under his name in Beveren, which for many years was a regular place for fans of the “ KSK Beveren ” football club . He died on June 15, 2014 at the age of 78 from complications from cancer .
