Scheldeprijs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Scheldeprijs ( nl. , Formerly also: Grote Scheldeprijs , Scheldeprijs Vlaanderen or Scheldeprijs Schoten , German: Scheldepreis , Großer Scheldepreis , Scheldepreis Flanders , Scheldepreis Schoten ), named after the river Scheldt , is a road bike race in Belgian Flanders .

The one-day race was held for the first time in 1907 and is therefore one of the oldest Belgian cycling races. The first edition began and ended in Antwerp . After the route changed frequently until 1925, Schoten was the starting and finishing point between 1926 and 1995. The race has been going from Antwerp to Schoten since 1996.

The Scheldeprijs has been part of the UCI Europe Tour since 2005 and is classified in the 1st HC category. The Scheldeprijs often ended in a mass sprint , which is why the race is also known as a classic sprinter.

In 2017 the start of the Tour of Flanders changed to Antwerp. Both races are organized by the same organizer and so the start of the Scheldeprij changed again. In 2017 they started once in Mol and since 2018 in Terneuzen , the Netherlands , with the Westerschelden tunnel being driven through neutralized immediately after the start before the race in Borssele is released.

Between 2012 and 2017, the German Marcel Kittel won five times. He is the record holder in this race ahead of the Briton Mark Cavendish with three wins.
