Louis Huin (* 1756 , † 6. September 1821 ) was a French glass painter , in Paris churches many stained glass windows restored or renewed.

family

Louis Huin was the son of a miller in Chalaines ( Département Meuse ). He probably learned the craft of stained glass from his older brother Nicolas Huin , who had a workshop in Paris. Louis Huin married Marie Victoire Desouches in 1791, the daughter of the Parisian master locksmith Louis Claude Desouches. This marriage resulted in four children: Adélaïde Victoire, married to the master roofer Anne Alexandre Hunout, Marie Louise, married to the carpenter Charles Marie Pouillet, their son Louis and Zoé Lilia, married to the lawyer Jacques Maurice Richard.

Life

At the time of his marriage, Louis Huin already had a considerable fortune, which he was able to increase more and more in the following years. He owned several houses in Paris and his workshop was at 14 rue de Verneuil in Paris ( 7th arrondissement ). During the French Revolution he worked mainly for private clients and at the beginning of the 19th century he became the preferred glass painter for the city of Paris. He restored and renewed many windows in Parisian churches, because the city had owned most of the parish churches in Paris since the French Revolution and was therefore required to be maintained. Huin worked in over 30 Paris churches such as B. St-Eustache , Notre-Dame and St-Nicolas-des-Champs .

In 1805 he received his largest commission with the renewal of all the windows in the Saint-Denis cathedral . On the construction site in Saint-Denis , Louis Huin employed 74 craftsmen, most of whom came from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He obtained his glass from the glass factory in Saint-Quirin .

In the last few years of his activity, public contracts have declined as his excessive price demands and unfulfilled agreements damaged his reputation. After his death on September 6, 1821, his widow and son Louis continued the business. On May 26, 1826, Louis Germain Bailly bought the stained glass workshop.
