Axel Merckx (born August 8, 1972 in Ukkel ) is a former Belgian cyclist .

Career

After Axel Merckx drove as a trainee for the Motorola team in 1993 , he became a professional racing cyclist with the Telekom team in 1994 . In 1995 he moved back to the Motorola team, where he was Lance Armstrong's teammate . His other positions were from 1997 to 1998 with the Polti team , from 1999 to 2000 Mapei-Quick Step , from 2001 to 2002 Domo-Farm Frites and from 2003 to 2004 Lotto-Domo . In 2005 he was under contract with the UCI ProTeam Davitamon Lotto . In 2006 he drove for Phonak . After the dissolution of this team , he switched back to the T-Mobile team in 2007, where he ended his career as a professional cyclist in August 2007.

Axel Merckx celebrated his greatest successes in 2000 when he won the Belgian road cycling championship and the eighth stage of the Giro d'Italia . Also in 2000 he won the Tour de Wallonie . At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 he was twelfth in the road race , in 2004 he won the bronze medal at the Games in Athens behind the Italian Paolo Bettini and the Portuguese Sérgio Paulinho .
