Uccle [ykl] ( French ) or Ukkel [ykəl] ( Dutch ) is one of 19 municipalities in the bilingual Brussels-Capital Region in Belgium . It has 83,024 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) on 22.9 square kilometers.
Uccle / Ukkel is located in the south of the city and borders on the Brussels sub-municipalities Forest / Vorst , Ixelles / Elsene , Brussels and Watermael-Boitsfort / Watermaal-Bosvoorde, as well as the Flemish facility communities Sint-Genesius-Rode , Linkebeek and Drogenbos . Uccle / Ukkel is the largest municipality in the capital region after the city of Brussels.
The municipality has a share in the southern urban forest, the Sonienwald , the residential areas adjacent to it are among the most prestigious in the Belgian capital. Many wealthy personalities own their villas here on huge, partly park-like properties. Well-known institutions in Uccle / Ukkel include the Royal Observatory , the Royal Meteorological Institute as well as the University of Liège and the Collège Saint-Pierre , a school founded in 1905.
Uccle / Ukkel has five suburban railway stations of the National Company of Belgian Railways and is served by tram lines 3, 23, 52, 55, 90, 91 and 92.
politics
Uccle / Ukkel is governed by a coalition of the liberal Mouvement Réformateur , which won an absolute majority in local elections in both 2006 and 2012, the humanists from the Center Démocrate Humaniste and the francophone regionalists from the Démocrate Fédéraliste Indépendant . The long-time mayor of this coalition, former Senate President Armand De Decker , resigned on June 17, 2017. He is accused of corruption, clientele politics and presumption of office in the Kazakhgate affair surrounding the Kazakh businessman Patokh Chodiev .
Boris Dilliès (MR) has been the new mayor since 2017, while the first deputy and acting mayor Marc Cools has since made his own list because he was not taken into account.
Sports
In the district of Diesdelle, which is considered to be the richest district in Belgium (2015), is the Ganzenvijver / Vivier d'Oie stadium , which is one of the oldest stadiums in Belgium and the first football stadium on mainland Europe with a concrete grandstand that still exists and is a listed building. Racing Club de Bruxelles had its most successful years in the stadium and was Belgian football champion six times between 1897 and 1908 . The club later moved to the Dreilindenstadion.
The Ganzenvijver / Vivier d'Oie stadium also hosted the first ever continental European international match. On May 1, 1904, the national teams of Belgium and France faced each other, the game ended 3: 3. After the game, the club secretary from Racing Club Louis Muhlinghaus agreed with his French colleagues to found FIFA , which took place three weeks later in Paris and at which he was elected the first general secretary.
