John Cluysenaar (complete: John (Jean) Edmond Cluysenaar ) (born September 26, 1899 in Uccle , † July 31, 1986 in Noville-sur-Mehaigne , Province of Namur ) was a sculptor , painter , draftsman and watercolorist .

Live and act

John Cluysenaar belongs to the Dutch / Belgian line of the Klausener family of architects, who originally came from Tyrol and later worked in Burtscheid . Since his father André Cluysenaar initially counteracted his artistic talent, John continued his self-taught education. At the age of 16 he was without funds in London and had to earn his money in various professions. This was followed by two years of military service in the Belgian army from 1917 to 1919.

Cluysenaar devoted himself to sculpture for the next 20 years. In 1924 he received the Prix de Rome and in 1925 the Prix Godecharle in Brussels for his work Les Baiser . After 1925 he went on a study trip through Italy and France . His first solo exhibition took place in London.

After his father's death he gave up sculpture and settled in London as a painter. Stays in Scotland and Ireland followed until he returned to Brussels in 1955. With Jacqueline Collier, his third wife, he moved to Noville-sur-Mehaigne, where she directed the John Clysenaar Foundation, founded in 1989. His daughter Anne Cluysenaar, who was married to the painter Sybil Fitzgerald Hewat, was born in 1936 and worked as a poet . She was murdered by her stepson on November 1, 2014.

style

His portrait busts are full of character and lively works in the impressionist tradition. His individualistic nature negated all art schools and ties to society. D. Derrey-Capon described his intuitive style as an all over painting . His pictures illustrate fleeting perceptions and improvised gestures and his colors are intense and impasto. The physiognomies fascinated him. The result was distortion, depersonalization, deformation and distortion of facial representations, an expressionist disclosure of his impressions. Derrey-Capon interpreted this primitive form of expression as a projection of his fears and search for identity.

Works by him with a surface speckled in red or purple and white came up for auction in March and August 2010 and have a value of 300,000 to 500,000 euros.
