Damien Jalet

Damien Jalet (born August 17, 1976 in Ukkel , Belgium) is a Belgian-French dancer , choreographer and director. Jalet works in the border areas of dance , theater , visual arts, performance , fashion and music. His works are often inspired by myths and rituals. As a choreographer he worked for u. a. for Eastman, the Chunky Move Dance Company, the Icelandic Dance Company and for Akram Khan , Erna Ómarsdóttir and Sasha Waltz .

Life

Jalet initially studied acting at the National Institute of the Performing Arts, Brussels ( NSAS ) and then completed training in modern dance in Brussels and New York. He also took courses in ethnomusicology with Giovanna Marini at the University of Paris. He began his ballet career in 1998 with Wim Vandekeybus in the play "The Day of Heaven and Hell", which premiered on October 16 in the Koninklijke Jacht building in Brussels. 2000 began his intense collaboration with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Les Ballets C de la B . With their first joint production "Rien de Rien" they went on a European tour. In 2001 "Rien de Rien" won the "Special Prize" at the BITEF Festival in Belgrade and in 2002 the "Nijinsky Award" in Monte Carlo.

Jalet, Cherkaoui and Marina Abramović met for the first time in Rome in 2004 during the performance of Abramović's “The Biography Remix” at the Teatro Palladium, but it wasn't until 2013 that they worked together in Paris in the production of Maurice Ravel's Boléro at the Palais Garnier . Jalet and Cherkaoui wrote the choreography, Abramovic designed the stage design, the dancers' costumes are creations by Riccardo Tisci , creative director at Givenchy. Also in 2013 he staged the performance "Les médusés" in the Louvre , in which 30 artists, including 12 dancers from the Eastman Company, were involved and which was seen by 18,000 visitors.

In 2017 he choreographed and rehearsed the dance scenes in Luca Guadagnino's film Suspiria . The following year he staged an opera for the first time with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui in Antwerp . For his production of Pelléas et Mélisande with Alejo Pérez at the conductor's podium, Abramović designed the set and Iris van Herpen the costumes. Marco Brambilla shot the videos for the production .
