Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (born March 10, 1976 in Antwerp ) is a Belgian dancer and choreographer of Flemish - Moroccan descent. Cherkaoui's choreographies use elements from many cultures, religions and art styles at the same time. For him, the common basis of this diversity is movement. He has created over 50 choreographic pieces and received two Olivier Pris for the best new dance production, three BallettTanz prizes (2008, 2011, 2017) and the KAIROS Prize (2009).

Life

Cherkaoui's father is Moroccan and Muslim who came to Belgium as a migrant worker, his mother is Belgian and Catholic. He was raised in French, although French was also a foreign language for his parents. The language of instruction in his state secular school was Dutch , in the Koran school he got to know the Koran . His career aspiration to be a dancer developed when he saw the dance film Fame - The Road to Fame on television at the age of seven , and later he also danced after Michael Jackson . Cherkaoui's father was against his choice of profession because he considered dance to be an art without a job. From classical ballet to flamenco to breakdance , he took all dance courses that were offered.

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's choreographies are characterized by the combination of elements from different cultures, religions and artistic styles. In his piece Sutra , which was voted the best performance of the year by ballet-tanz magazine in 2009 , he had seventeen young Shaolin monks perform. These apply the sequences of movements and punching sequences of kung fu in a choreography with, on, in, under and against wooden boxes.

In 2010, he premiered Babel (Words) , a total work of art consisting of live concert, theater, dance, text and sculpture at the Cirque Royal in Brussels. At the Movimentos Festival in Wolfsburg in May 2011, Cherkaoui danced with the flamenco dancer Maria Pagès in the world premiere of his piece Dunas . Cherkaoui's ballet Labyrinth had its world premiere in Het Muziektheater Amsterdam ( Das Musiktheater Amsterdam ) in June 2011 . The next world premiere of Cherkaoui followed on September 6, 2011 in the Sadler's Wells Theater in London with the dance piece TeZukA , which deals with the life of the manga artist Osamu Tezuka .

In 2013 Cherkaoui staged the Boléro by Maurice Ravel at the Paris Garnier Opera together with Damien Jalet . The costumes for this ballet were designed by the Italian fashion designer Riccardo Tisci , who works for Givenchy , in collaboration with the Serbian artist Marina Abramović . In December 2013 his piece Genesis had the world premiere in Beijing with the Chinese dancer Yabin Wang . In the 2014/15 season he staged Stravinsky's first ballet composition Der Feuervogel , a ballet piece that was written for the Ballets Russes in 1910 for the Stuttgart Ballet .

Since September 2015 Cherkaoui has been director of the Koninklijk Ballet Vlaanderen in Antwerp, which merged with the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp and Ghent to form the Kunsthuis in January 2014 .

In his dance theater piece “Fractus V” (2016) five men dance, act, speak and sing on the subject of fractures and violence. In 2017 he staged the Philip Glass opera Satyagraha , which depicts Gandhi's early years in South Africa, as a co-production by Theater Basel , Komische Oper Berlin and Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp and Gent .
