Alejo Pérez (born May 3, 1974 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine conductor .

life and work

Pérez studied in his hometown and with Peter Eötvös , whom he also assisted. He then worked with Michael Gielen and was Christoph von Dohnányi's assistant at the NDR Symphony Orchestra from 2005 to 2007 . A rapid career followed throughout Europe and in his home country, both in opera and in the concert hall. Pérez is considered to be a specialist in music from the entire 20th century and the present, but his repertoire also includes works from the Baroque, Mozart, French Romanticism, Verdis and Wagner.

From 2009 and 2012 Alejo Pérez acted as musical director of the Teatro Argentino de La Plata , where he successfully studied Don Carlos , La damnation de Faust , Lady Macbeth of Mzensk , Tristan and Isolde and Das Rheingold, among others . He conducted at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma , at the Opéra National de Paris , the Frankfurt Opera , the Leipzig Opera and the Cologne Opera as well as at the National Opera in Warsaw and at the Lithuanian National Theater . He has worked for many years with the Teatro Real in Madrid, where he took on new productions of Rihm's Die Eroberung von Mexico , Golijov's Ainadamar , Mozart's Don Giovanni and Britten's Death in Venice , as well as concert performances of Wagner's Rienzi and concerts with Plácido Domingo and Ian Bostridge conducted. In Madrid he worked with the directors Pierre Audi , Willy Decker and Peter Sellars . At the Opéra de Lyon he conducted Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande , Schreker's Die Gezeichen , Stravinsky's Le rossignol and Henzes Pollicino .

In 2015 he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival with a highly successful concert production of Massenets Werther and at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels with a new production of Powder Her Face by Philip Hensher and Thomas Adès . This was followed by a new production of Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Oslo Opera House . In 2016 he was invited by the Salzburg Festival to conduct a new staged Faust production in the Großer Festspielhaus . Reinhard von der Thannen is responsible for the staging, stage design and costumes, while Franck Evin is responsible for the lighting . The leading roles are top-class with Piotr Beczała , Ildar Abdrazakov and Maria Agresta . There are also invitations for Carmen in Palermo and for Eugene Onegin in Chicago.

In the concert hall, too, Pérez's work is centered on the 20th century. In Argentina he campaigned for the work of compatriot Antonio Tauriello , presented Messiaens Oiseaux exotiques at the Teatro Colón in 2001 and conducted Mahler's Eighth , also known as the Symphony of a Thousand , with a large orchestra and a number of choirs in 2010 in the Luna Park stadium in Buenos Aires . In Germany he has conducted concerts for the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen , the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne , the NDR Symphony Orchestra , the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg and the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin . Pérez also conducted a number of other well-known orchestras, including the Philharmonia Orchestra (London), the Orchester de la Suisse Romande (Geneva), the Ensemble intercontemporain (Paris), the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria (Vienna and St. Pölten) and orchestras in Bologna, Auckland and Stuttgart.
