Guy R. Cornelis
Guy R. Cornelis (born August 25, 1946 in Uccle , Belgium ) is a Belgian microbiologist .
Life
Cornelis studied pharmacy , did research on β-lactamases in Oxford (UK) and received his doctorate in 1974 from Louvain University in Belgium. He examined antibiotic resistance - plasmids in Bristol (GB) as well as transposons at the University of Freiburg (D) and at the Max Planck Institute in Cologne (Germany). After being appointed professor in Louvain in 1984, he began to study bacterial pathogenesis. In 1991 he joined the Christian de Duve Institute in Brussels. In 2001 he took over a professorship for molecular microbiology at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel . Since his retirement in 2011, Cornelis has continued his research at the University of Namur in Belgium.
Act
Guy R. Cornelis deals with the elucidation of complex mechanisms of action of bacterial infectious diseases . Cornelis and H. Wolf-Watz (Umeå, Sweden) received special recognition for their discovery of the bacterial type III secretion system (T3SS). T3SS is a mechanism by which bacteria inject a cocktail of cell toxins, so-called effector proteins, into animal, plant or insect cells. These effectors disarm or reprogram the host cells by sabotaging their cellular signaling network . The T3SS device, also known as the injectisome, is a complex nano-syringe that consists of more than 25 different proteins . Since 2004, Cornelis has been researching Capnocytophaga canimorsus , a bacterium in the dog's mouth that causes fatal infections in humans.
