Torhout (other, partly older spellings Turhoult, Turholt, Thorout, Torout, Thourout, Toeroet) is a city in the province of West Flanders in Belgium . It has 20,463 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) on an area of around 4,500 hectares.
history
Finds from Roman times show that Torhout is one of the oldest cities in Flanders and existed as early as around the 2nd century AD.
The bones of the martyr St. Donatian († around 303–305) were kept as relics in the Torhout monastery until they were brought to Bruges in 863.
Emperor Ludwig the Pious donated the income from the Turholt Monastery to the missionary Ansgar von Bremen (Anscharius). That is why Adam von Bremen mentioned it in the Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum , translated into "Turholz". After Ludwig's death and the division of the empire, the monastery fell to Charles the Bald in 843 .
At the end of the 11th century, Robert von Friesland built Wijnendale Castle . In the 12th century Torhut received city rights. In 1229 Johanna von Flanders (1200–1244) founded a hospital and a beguinage. At the Battle of Wijnendale on September 28, 1708, Spanish and French troops fought against the victorious Allied troops. The battle was part of the War of the Spanish Succession .
