Zuienkerke is a small Belgian municipality in the Flanders region . It is located in the province of West Flanders and belongs to the Arrondissement of Bruges . The municipality has 2721 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and is therefore one of the smallest independent municipalities in Belgium in terms of population. The municipality consists of the main town Zuienkerke with almost 1500 inhabitants and the villages Houtave , Meetkerke and Nieuwmunster with about 400–500 inhabitants each.
Zuienkerke has an area of 48.86 km²; the postcode is 8377 and the coordinates are 51 ° 15 'N and 3 ° 09' E. The place is still dominated by agriculture, but tourism is playing an increasingly important role due to its proximity to the towns on the coast.
Zuienkerke is only 6–8 kilometers southwest of the Belgian coast on the English Channel from the seaside resorts of Blankenberge and De Haan at an altitude of only max. 3 meters above sea level . Bruges is 8 km south-east, Ostend 16 km west, Ghent 46 km south-east and Brussels 96 km south-east.
The next motorway exit is around 10 km southwest at Jabbeke on the A10 / E 40 and the next train stations are at Blankenberge , Zeebrugge , Ostend and Bruges . International long-distance trains such as u. a. the Thalys .
There is a regional airport near Ostend and an international airport near the capital Brussels.
