Night of Flanders

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Night of Flanders ( Dutch De Nacht van West-Vlaanderen, French La Nuit des Flandres ) is a popular and street run in the Belgian city of Torhout that has been taking place since 1980. The main run is a 100 km ultra marathon . A marathon has been part of the program since 1992, and a 10 km run since 1997.

The event also includes hikes over 10 km, 42 km and 100 km.

stretch

The 10 km run is a circular course within Torhout that hikers can also complete.

The marathon consists of two laps that run south to Lichtervelde and back. The first lap is 22.9266 km, the second 19.2683 km.

In the 100 km run, the first lap of the marathon is completed once and the second four times.

The 42 km and 100 km hikes head north towards Bruges ; the latter crosses Bruges.

All runs and hikes start at eight in the evening. There is a time limit of 13 hours for the 100 km run and 24 hours for the 100 km hike.

history

The model for the event was the Dodentocht . The runs up to 1988 were probably held on too short a route; This applies in particular to the year 1986, when Jean-Paul Praet ran the fabulous time of 6:03:51 hours, which was not recognized by the responsible associations as the world record because the route was inadequately documented and therefore no measurement protocol with a retrospective Jones counter .

Jean-Paul Praets winning time of 1989 was also not recognized as a world record because the Praet because of apartheid against South Africa imposed sports boycott had broken and was subsequently suspended by his Association.

In 1987, 1993, 2002 and 2009 the 100 km World Championship was held as part of the Night of Flanders, in 1998, 2006 and 2009 the 100 km European Championship.
