Günter Lörke 1960

Günter Lörke (born June 23, 1935 in Sellnow , Pomerania) is a former cyclist from the GDR who won an Olympic silver medal in the team time trial in 1960 . His learned profession is lathe operator.

Career

Lörke began cycling in 1953 . His first significant success was the victory in the Erzgebirge Tour in 1957. In 1958 he won the GDR championship in the team championship of road driving with the SC DHfK Leipzig . In that year he was also appointed to the GDR national team. In 1959 Lörke was part of the GDR contingent on the peace trip , where he finished 18th. In 1960 he had also qualified, but had to give up due to an injury a few hours before the start of the race and was replaced by the then multiple stage winner Manfred Weißleder . At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , the team ranking in road races was for the first time not added up from the results of the individual race, but instead as an independent 100-kilometer team time trial. As part of the all-German team , four drivers from SC DHfK Leipzig competed. Egon Adler , Erich Hagen , Günter Lörke and Täve Schur finished second behind the Italian four-man in 2: 16: 56.31 hours. He achieved greater success in 1964 with a stage win in the Tour of Bulgaria .

Täve Schur characterized him as "a very reliable team driver" and "a great one when it comes to willpower."

Professional

After his career in 1965 he qualified as an engineer for hydraulic and worked as a designer in a hydraulic Combine in Leipzig .
