Egon Adler (* 18th February 1937 in Großpösna in Leipzig , † 28. January 2015 ) was a DDR - cyclists .

Athletic career

At the age of 12 he competed in his first bike race on a self-made bike. Initially, he was a member of BSG Motor Stötteritz . The trained roofer later started for the SC Rotation Leipzig . In 1975 he achieved his first major success by winning the Harzer Tribüne Mountain Prize . He was also able to win this in 1959, 1963 and 1964.

Adler began his cycling career in 1949 at the age of twelve on a women's bike as a touring rider. His first club was BSG Motor Stötteritz, later he switched to SC Rotation, then to SC DHfK Leipzig. In 1958 he took part in the Peace Tour for the first time and won the longest stage from Görlitz to Berlin . In the overall individual ranking, he finished fifth. He was able to repeat this success the following year, where he won two more stages. In 1958 he was GDR champion in team pursuit and 3rd in the overall individual ranking of the GDR tour (with two stage wins) and the following year GDR champion in team time trial . In 1959 he won the silver medal in the two-man team driving at the GDR championships . National he won a. a. the Harz Mountain Prize.

In 1960, Adler won two more stages of the peace run and, after his victory in the ninth section, took over the overall leader's yellow jersey from his teammate Manfred Weißleder for the first time . After Weißleder had snatched it away from him through his success on the tenth stage, Adler drove into the yellow again on the way to his hometown Leipzig . He was able to maintain his lead in the overall standings until he had a hard crash on the final day. After he had just fought his way back to the main field on the replacement machine, he suffered a defect and finally lost the connection to the main field . The GDR team, which had been leading in the team standings up to that point, ordered their captain Täve Schur and Weißleder to support them. The trio drove well over 150 kilometers behind the peloton without reaching the peloton again. After both Adler and Weißleder were deprived of their chances of victory, Erich Hagen was able to win the last stage in Berlin and thus bring the GDR's victory in both the individual and the team classification under one roof. Egon Adler fell back to seventh place in the overall standings on the last day.

At the XVII. At the Summer Olympic Games in Rome , Adler took part in the first ever 100 km team time trial with Schur, Hagen and Günter Lörke . After Lörke had to get off his bike early in the scorching heat, Adler struggled for the remaining kilometers. Sometimes he was pushed by Schur. Nevertheless, the four drivers won the Olympic silver medal. At the UCI Road World Championships in 1960 at the Sachsenring , Adler finished ninth. In the same year he won the West German classic Rund um Dortmund and won Berlin-Leipzig.

At the end of the year, the successful Friedensfahrt team led by Schur, Adler, Hagen, Weißleder, Bernhard Eckstein and Johannes Schober was voted Team of the Year in the GDR. In 1961 Adler took part in the Peace Tour for the fourth time in a row, but was unable to build on the successes of his earlier participations and had to give up on the 5th stage.

In the Olympic year 1964 he was called up as a road driver in the GDR national team and took part in the German-German qualifying races for Tokyo. He celebrated his last success on the road in 1965 at the Torgau Grand Prix.

After that, Adler only drove standing races behind pacemaker Horst Aurich , finished second in the GDR standing championship in 1965 and reached fifth place at the UCI rail world championships in Anoeta near San Sebastian . In 1966 he was only able to take 6th place in the GDR standing championship and ended his career at the age of 29.

After his career, Adler worked as a self-employed taxi operator. Adler's father was also active as a cyclist. He has three sisters. His son Uwe Adler , who also started for the SC DHfK Leipzig, could not achieve the great successes of his father as a cyclist in the 1980s, but in 1987 he won the GDR best determination in two-man team driving .
