1957 UCI Road World Championships
The 1957 UCI Road World Championships took place on August 18th in Waregem , Belgium .
Racing action
For the 24th road world championship for professional drivers , 70 participants started on a 285.6 kilometer route, which was held on a 24 km circuit. In addition to the 82 meter high Tiegemberg, which had to be conquered twelve times, the drivers had to contend with rainy weather. The race was marked by numerous breakaway attempts, in which the German drivers Lothar Friedrich and Hennes Junkermann also took part. For a long time the Belgian Rik Van Looy drove away from the field, which only caught up with him on the last lap. In the final sprint there was a duel between defending champion Rik Van Steenbergen from Belgium and Frenchman Louison Bobet . Thanks to a dangling, close to the limit of what was allowed, the 32-year-old Belgian gained the decisive advantage and secured the world title for the third time. Seven athletes from Germany had started the race, four held out to the end, but all ended up in the back of the field: Hennes Junkermann (31st), Franz Reitz (33rd), Horst Backat (34th) and Lothar Friedrich (37th) ). A total of 29 drivers gave up prematurely. The difficulty of the race was also demonstrated by the fact that the winner had to be lifted from the bike after the finish line, completely exhausted. He had reached an hourly average of 37 km / h.
The day before, the amateurs had determined their world champion on a 190-kilometer course. The 22-year-old Louis Proost was also won by a Belgian who achieved an hourly average of 37.8 km / h. Just 12 seconds behind the new world champion, GDR driver Gustav-Adolf Schur came fourth and Friedhelm Fischerkeller from the Federal Republic came sixth.
