Horst Backat (born December 16, 1935 in Brackel ) is a former German racing cyclist .

Athletic career

The Backat, later based in Bochum , appeared for the first time in 1955 in the results lists of national road races. The 19-year-old celebrated his first significant victory in the Rund um Düren road race . Backat took 3rd place at the 1955 German amateur road racing championship.

1956 changed Backat into the professional camp and headed first for the German team Altenburger, where Hans Junkermann and Franz Reitz were under contract. After winning the Veith Grand Prix, 2nd place in the German professional road championship and 13th place in the Tour de Suisse in 1956 , Backat took part in the 1956 road world championship . During the trip, which was characterized by bad weather, he was next to Emil Reineckeone of two German drivers who made it to the finish line out of eight originally started. Of the 28 classified players, Backat came in 25th. After an unsuccessful participation in the international races Milan-Sanremo (124th) and Gent-Wevelgem (43rd) in 1957 Backat took part in the road world championship again that year .
