Schalk Verhoef (1957)

Schalk Verhoef (born August 5, 1935 in Rotterdam , the Netherlands ; † January 18, 1997 there ) was a Dutch cyclist .

Athletic career

Verhoef initially drove amateur road races and in 1954 achieved his first victories at major events at Rotterdam-Katendrecht and Acht van Chaam . In 1955 he won the Dutch amateur road championship. As a 22-year-old, he finished third in the 1957 World Amateurs Road Championship . In the same year he won the Tour of Zeeland.

In 1958 Verhoef became a professional driver for the Dutch racing team Radium, where the German driver Klaus Bugdahl was also under contract. In the same year Verhoef moved to the Belgian team Dossche Sport. His only significant win that year was at the Kriterium in Eede, the Netherlands . In 1959 he changed the racing team again and now drove for the Dutch team Locomotief-Vredestein. Verhoef did not appear in the results lists again until 1960 when he took part in the Tour of the Netherlands . He won a stage and was 27 at the end of the day. His contract with Locomotief-Vredestein expired in 1961, after which Verhoef ended his career as a professional driver.
