Arend Hendrik "Arie" Hassink (born December 9, 1950 in Neede ) is a former Dutch cyclist.

Arie Hassink was one of the best amateur cyclists in the Netherlands from the early 1970s to the 1980s. In 1975 he was part of the Dutch national team for the GDR tour , which he finished in 29th place. In 1976 he was the Dutch amateur road champion, won twice - in 1977 and 1978 - the prestigious amateur race Olympia's Tour , three times - in 1978, 1979, 1982 - Cologne – Schuld – Frechen and 1978 around Cologne . In 1976 Hassink started at the Olympic Games in Montreal and finished 25th in the road race; with the Dutch team ( Frits Pirard , Adri van Houwelingen and Fons van Katwijk ) he reached 17th place in the team time trial .

Hassink would have liked to become a professional and was already in negotiations with the French team Gan-Mercier . However, he contracted tuberculosis . The doctors therefore advised him against a professional career, as his lungs could only perform 80 percent after an operation. Hassink continued to race as an amateur and undertook various training efforts to strengthen his lungs. Because he was tall and thin, he was nicknamed De Spijker ( the nail ).

After the end of his active career, Hassink became sales manager of a company for bicycle saddles and was active as a sports director for various teams. He is the father of the former racing cyclist Arne Hassink .
