RC Adler Cologne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The RC Adler Köln 1921 eV is a cycling club in Cologne.

The club was founded in 1921, and the founding members included the later three-time German sprint champion , Paul Oszmella , and the Krewer brothers . Other well-known drivers who belonged to this club were Mathias Engel , Peter Steffes and Werner Miethe . In 1923 the German national team consisted entirely of Adler drivers.

The club has been organizing the Cologne-Schuld-Frechen one-day race since 1952 . The first staging of the race took place in 1920 under the organization of RC Delia 09 and subsequently by RC Vorwärts, initially under the name Cologne-Münstereifel-Cologne and later as Cologne-Euskirchen-Cologne . The race has been organized by RC Adler Cologne since 1952 and has taken place without interruption ever since. Until 1968 the start and finish was in downtown Cologne . From there the route led to the village of Schuld in the middle of the Ahr valley and back to Cologne. In 1969 the start and finish were moved to Frechen . From 2002 onwards there was also a race for women on a shorter route. In 2012 it was initially unclear whether the race would take place, as the city of Frechen had decided to cancel its contribution to the financing. In December 2012, the 2013 event was canceled. The event has been held as a bike tour since 2014 .

Another traditional event of the club was the two-man team race Silver Eagle of Cologne , a track race for amateurs that was traditionally held until 1998 in advance of the Cologne six-day race . Many later six-day stars won this race as amateurs before converting to the pros. In the 2000s, a new edition of the race in the Radstadion Cologne was attempted, the last one took place in 2007. Since the inauguration of the new cycling stadium in Cologne in 1996, the club has held a summer track championship there on four dates every year.
