Willy Franssen

Willy Franssen (born December 8, 1932 in Neuss ; † November 18, 1990 in Neuss) was a German cyclist .

Willy Franssen began his cycling career at the age of 17. In 1953 he was awarded for Neuss cycling club from 1888/09 launched, together with Hermann Spiegel German champion in two-crew driving the amateurs ; the following year he took third place with Spiegel. He won the traditional race for the Silver Eagle in Cologne three times (1955 with Willi Hochgeschurtz , 1956 with Hardy Remagen , 1958 with Heinz Vopel). In 1956 he won the Cologne – Schuld – Frechen cycle race . In 1957 he won the German championship title in the tandem race , together with Ehrenfried Rudolph and in 1958 for the second time in the two-man team race with Heinz Vopel . Then Franssen turned professional and started among other things in fourteen six-day races . In 1960 he finished third in the six-day race in Cologne with Gerrit Schulte .

In 1961 Willy Franssen ended his career as a professional cyclist after a protracted knee injury.

Professional

Franssen was a master mechanic . After retiring, he worked in his parents' two-wheeler business in Neuss .
