Dieter Berkmann

Dieter Berkmann (born July 27, 1950 in Mittenwald ) is a former German cyclist .

Cycling career

Dieter Berkmann rode in the sprint and tandem disciplines on the track and was German amateur champion six times . In 1967 he was able to win the German championship in the 500-meter time trial as a youth . At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal , Berkmann took fourth place in the sprint. He then became a professional and as such in 1978 and 1979 runner-up in the sprint at UCI track world championships . He also started 19 times in six-day races .

After the sports career

After the end of his active career, Berkmann worked as an honorary national trainer for track cycling (short-term) from 1982 to 1984. He had already started studying medicine during his sports career . Today Berkmann works as an orthopedic surgeon in Miesbach . Since 1996 he has also been a track doctor at the Munich six-day races.

On March 21, 2009 Berkmann stood at the general assembly of the Association of German Cyclists in Leipzig as a candidate against the incumbent President Rudolf Scharping . In this election Berkmann was defeated by 399 to 174 votes.
