Athletic career

Paul Oszmella started out as an amateur road cyclist after the First World War . In 1922 he turned to track cycling . From 1923 to 1925 he was German champion in the amateur sprint three times in a row and in 1926 took second place in the renowned sprint classic Grand Prix de Paris . He then turned professional and signed up with Diamant . Until 1932 he was on the podium several times at German sprint track championships, but was never able to win the title again. He also drove six-day races with Ludwig Schorn , albeit with little success; The two won the two- man team event Silver Eagle of Cologne three times . In 1935 he ended his cycling career after falling badly on the sand track in the Duisburg Prussia Stadium. The double fracture of his skull that he suffered prevented him from continuing his career. In 1921 Paul Oszmella was one of the co-founders of the RC Adler Cologne , after the Second World War he chaired the Association of German Professional Racing Drivers for many years. In 1950 he set up a training school for the Cologne area, where young railroad drivers were trained and given the opportunity to compete.

Trivia

Oszmella was born in Cologne's original Eigelsteinviertel , in the street "Unter Krahnenbäume". "D'r Lang" was particularly popular as a racing driver in Cologne, also because of his "Cologne" style and his massive appearance. When he accelerated the spurt, the enthusiastic audience shouted: “Now mow the puck!” His elegant way of doing the lap of honor followed by a bow while the band played his signature tune “Yes, the sunshine ...” was also popular.
