Willi Altig (born January 17, 1935 in Mannheim ) is a former German professional cyclist .

Athletic career

Willi Altig had been active at the RRC final spurt in Mannheim since 1949 . In his career as a cyclist, he was German champion five times and in the 1950s, together with his brother Rudi Altig, he was an attraction on the cycling tracks in Germany in the two-man team and the track four. Their dynamism and powerful driving style earned the brothers the nickname "The Ox".

From 1960 to 1967 he was a professional racing driver. He celebrated his greatest success in 1964 when he won the final stage of the Giro d'Italia . In 1960 and 1966 he took part in the Tour de France .

Professional and honors

After the end of his professional career, Altig was the tenant of a petrol station and an insurance agent before he took over a bicycle shop in Mannheim- Neckarstadt from Karl Ziegler . In 2002 he became chairman of the RRC final spurt in Mannheim . The cycling track in Mannheim was named after him and his brother in 2012. In March 2017 a path in Mannheim was named after the Altig Altigweg brothers .
